MBA 2023

What made you choose a career path in healthcare?
I was a healthcare provider before business school, and I was always interested in science, improving healthcare outcomes, and making healthcare more equitable for underrepresented communities.

What have you learned so far from being President of the MBA Healthcare Club?
I have learned that the key to success is open communication, transparency, and grace. Transitioning to in-person experiences after being virtual for the past couple of years takes patience, understanding, and a lot of coordination.

What made you select UNC Kenan-Flagler for your MBA?
It was the immediate sense of community, collaboration, rigorous academics, and knowing that I would be supported by faculty, mentors, and students. In addition, I was looking for an MBA program that had strong ties to healthcare organizations.

Tell us about a favorite class or professor.
Professor Al Segars is my favorite professor. His Technology Strategy and Business Innovation class opened my eyes to the many upcoming technologies that will disrupt many industries including healthcare (he was co-founder of a healthcare start-up that printed 3D organs). He has vast experience in many areas including technology, sustainability, and strategy. His ability to connect with students while providing an inclusive learning environment enables engagement from everyone. He also is the kindest, most humble professor that can sit with anyone and have a conversation about anything.

Do you have any advice for incoming students?
Don’t be afraid to speak up in class, take risks, and be open to opportunities that come your way. I’ve learned the most from the unexpected opportunities that required me to adapt quickly and think on my feet. Also, if time permits, consider a global experience like a Doing Business In (DBI), Global Immersion Elective (GIE), or exchange program. International experiences richen your professional experience, and improves your ability to connect with others and see the world from a different perspective.

Tell us about a hobby or personal interest.
I am an avid cookbook collector–I have over 300 cookbooks. I purchase every James Beard and New York Times top 10 books every year. Every time I dive into a cookbook, reading about the author’s personal journey and the story behind each recipe makes me forget where I am for a while, like I’m on a mini vacation.
