For decades, the US health system has worked to shift from paying for volume to paying for value. Accountable care models, alternative payment arrangements, and new incentive structures are now embedded across Medicare and the commercial market. Yet the central question remains unsettled: has value-based care actually delivered value? Has it reduced total cost of care, improved outcomes, strengthened primary care, and eased the burden on patients and clinicians, or has it simply added complexity to a fee for service foundation?
Hosted by the UNC Center for the Business of Health (CBOH), this annual research symposium brings thought leaders across policy, practice, industry, and academia together to confront that question directly. Grounded in evidence and real-world experience, the convening will examine where measurable progress has occurred, where expectations have outpaced results, and what structural barriers continue to limit impact. The symposium will look at what the evidence shows, what lessons have emerged, and what must change if value based care is to deliver the meaningful results it was designed to achieve.
All sessions will operate under Chatham House Rule in order to encourage thoughtful and objective insights and dialogue.
