Of the many professions disrupted by COVID-19, few have been as severely affected as that of direct care workers, especially those working in areas such as home healthcare and childcare. This work is essential for the rest of the economy to function properly; for example, more than 15% of mothers with young children left their jobs because of childcare issues in 2020, when the height of the pandemic forced widespread closures of childcare facilities.
