This PowerPoint is from the October 2026 Eastern AHEC Nursing Conference, where CBOH Research Assistant Professor Josh Barrett presented on artificial intelligence in nursing. The talk covered current trends and how AI is changing the work nurses do in healthcare organizations.
Nurses spend much of each shift documenting care in the electronic health record (EHR), which takes time away from patients and contributes to burnout. Health systems are now adding AI tools to the EHR, including ambient documentation, automated charting, and predictive alerts, to handle some of this work. These changes affect staffing models, labor costs, nurse retention, and whether technology investments pay off. Health system leaders need to know which nursing tasks AI can handle well and which still need a nurse.
